Biography


Jan Willem de With (born 25th of August 1994 in Lüneburg in Germany with dutch roots) is a multi-awarded and nominated young film composer, producer and musician currently based in London.

His soundtracks were screened/performed at film festivals around the world like Cannes, London, New York, Prague, Amsterdam, Zurich, Luzern, Aubagne. For his music he worked together with musicians and ensembles like “The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra”, “State Orchestra Halle”, “Skopje Radio-symphonic Orchestra”, “21st Century Choir Lucerne”, “Zürcher Vokalisten” or singer/songwriter Phil Ryan and Chiara Dubey.

 

Jan Willem started his musical career at early age of 5 by giving first concerts and taking professional music lessons in Piano, Keyboard, singing (tenor), (e) guitar and pipe organ. He was involved in several musical projects, events, bands, choirs as soloist, musician, conductor, singer and actor. During his early education composing and conducting became an important output of his creative work. After a 2 year apprenticeship as a Church-musician and choir-conductor at the age of 14, he conducted several choirs and performed his music and arrangements. Besides school he went to University for Music and Theatre Hamburg where he took composition and orchestration lessons with Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Andreas Schultz (student of György Ligeti). 

 

Jan Willem received first national wide attention in the german TV competition “Dein Song” by KIKA/ZDF in 2014 where he was selected to be one of 16 finalists to perform his Rock and Roll Song live in TV.

 

In several public and private masterclasses and workshops for film music and orchestration including professionals like Michael Giacchino, Balz Bachmann, Marcel Vaid, Oliver Paulus, Benjamin Köthe, Jan Willem could exchange and extend his experiences. In 2014, he was awarded a scholarship for “Filmsound Hamburg” where he could learn from composers like Javier Navarette, Oliviere Deriviere, Chris Huelsbeck or Lisle Moore.

 

One of his most important achievements so far was the awarding of the “German Film music Award” in the category “Best Music For Short-Film 2016” for his music to the animation movie “Little Infinity”.

 

Jan Willem studied Film music and composition at several Schools and Conservatoires like the School Of Entertainment and Technology (apprenticeship as composer for media) or Zurich University Of Arts (Bachelor in Composition for Film, Theatre and Media) with professors like Niki Reiser, Peter Scherer, Matthias Steinauer, André Bellmont, Rodolphe Schacher, Till Löffler, Kurt Widorski, Benjamin Lang, Domenico Ferrari, Marc Kissóczy. Currently he is studying “Composition for Screen” at the Royal College Of Music in London (professors: Francis Shaw, Gilbert Nuono) for which he was awarded with a german scholarship by “DAAD” (“Deutscher Akademischer Auslandsdienst”).

 

Besides his work, Jan Willem is also giving lectures about film music, sound and collaboration skills between film composers and film directors at film festivals and media events.
